Three Winters is a multi-peiced installation of 92 individual mixed media artworks (22 x 22cm) that form a long timeline. This artwork was the central piece of Interior|Exterior: Landscapes from the Far North.
The last winter past was my third living in Cairns, it has become my favourite time of year. The ninety-two days of Winter are depicted through macro and micro representations of my seasonal experiences with the landscape; snapshot-like moments of sugarcane, blue skies, coastline, colours, textures and weekend drives build in forming a timeline of observation and portray my growing relationship with place.
Three Winters expresses the many moments that can form a rich understanding of our surrounds. A unique hand-painted sign can extend beyond simple advertising, illuminated sugarcane flowers during sunset light may be simply breathtaking, or the weathered façade of a local mill can impart a sense of history and experience.
Our relationship with both the natural and built environment can be subtle yet significant. This continuum of time explores the often-overlooked significant subtleties that layer in forming a beautiful Far North Queensland winter.
