Magic Beach Series

New work is happening! These three paintings are the first stage of ‘Magic Beach’. The title is borrowed from Alison Lester’s children’s book of the same name. My son LOVES the beach, which he calls ‘Magic beach’ just as we read in the book (on repeat). This book pulled me back to my own childhood and captures Garry’s approach to the seaside- whimsical and full of life.

These new paintings aim to embody in their abstraction, our repeated beach journeys. replete with paths, wave rhythms, shifting sands, Rockpool life, changing skies and the steadfast horizon.
Garry’s energy and curiosity have shifted my beach experiences. I hope these paintings help me never forget how beautiful this time in my life has been. May Garry forever hold a ‘Magic Beach’ inside.

Here & There (Part Two)

‘Road Rhythms’ 2022, out in it’s natural habitat, in Eltham Northern NSW

Earlier this year I had an exhibition with fellow painter Julie Poulsen titled, Here & There. There was some unfinished business with this series, so I decided to continue on; recently completing the second instalment of paintings.

Seven new works continue to extend on my driving experience in the local region of Northern NSW. Winding country roads peppered with potholes make for memorable driving sensations. Driving becomes an activity of focus when manoeuvring the variety of roundish bunkers and soft shoulders, often while travelling at 100km. This swerving motion is a ubiquitous experience that becomes a layered bodily memory entwined with my particular sense of place. ‘Did you have a good run?’ is a general local welcoming query upon arrival; a question directly related to pothole hits and misses. The brushwork and mark-making reimagine travelling sensations, with colours taking the initial response into a painterly joyride through imaginary terrain. These paintings continue my practice interest of paying attention to everyday sensations while moving through environments then extending this experience through material expression.

The new work is part of the Revival Art & Design ‘Summer Soiree’ exhibition, running 24th November- 24th December. All works are layered up with glorious paint and lovingly framed in timber. Full images are available under the ‘Gallery’ tab. If you’re interested in purchasing work see the Revival site here or drop into the Albion (Brisbane) gallery.

As always, thank you for your interest and support :)

Art As Knowledge Online Toolkit for Yr12 Visual Art

‘Last year students found your online toolkit valuable and as a teacher I found it very helpful in guiding the students through their inquiry. We would like to purchase again please’

-Rachel, Visual Arts Teacher

My online toolkit is designed for senior Qld visual students. To help them navigate their studies and the inquiry process.

This content arose from working with over fifty Qld schools, seeing the common roadblocks and questions. This is in combination with my own creative practice and research/teaching experience. Overall, I found when the students really understand the nature of arts investigation, their own autonomous practice thrives.

The content is divided up into several short videos, where I guide through various topics. These videos are designed to be moved through at any pace; they can be rewatched, set as homework tasks, or just be on hand for students’ to do their own independent research.

Here is a breakdown of the content:

Anna Turnbull Artist

ATT QLD Schools. Teachers, are you looking for a fabulous artist to present a workshop?? I introduce fellow walking-artist Anna Turnbull. Anna is based in Moreton Bay and produces ceramic and mixed media work.

I have been working as mentor in a professional development capacity with Anna over the past six months. Her work is interested in expressing the sensory aspects of place through 3D forms. It is textural, individual and contemporary. Anna is a seasoned workshopper and know she would be fabulous to work with, particularly with senior high school students in the Art as Knowledge or Art as Code units. Anna has a rich process and conceptual grounding behind her work, which will really help students develop their own unique lines of inquiry.

Check out Annas website here or Instagram or contact at annaturnbullart@gmail.com

Here & There Exhibition

Come along to Brisbane exhibition! A display of new paintings. Opening drinks on Friday 17th June 5.30-7.30pm, all welcome. On display June 15-26, drop in for a look and coffee at Albion Art hub cafe next door.

The exhibition will have new paintings from places/moments here & there in landscapes.
I am honoured to be alongside @juliepoulsen_artist . Julie’s paintings embody life in Cairns, a place I hold dearly. As a painter, I truly envy her unique aesthetic. Her works consistently have a gritty but quiet beauty, paint applied with a spontaneous confidence, that I know can only evolve out of an enduring practice. Julie’s ability to observe & interpret the everyday world around her is a remarkable skill that makes me see surrounds anew.

Hope to see you for opening celebration :)
