Here & There

This series is a celebration of movement, atmosphere and moments experienced in landscape. The paintings channel driving the winding country roads in my local region of northern NSW. These roads are infamous for potholes, made even more prevalent with recent rain weather events. Driving becomes an activity of focus when manoeuvring the variety of roundish bunkers and soft shoulders, often while travelling at 100km. This swerving motion is a ubiquitous experience that becomes a layered bodily memory entwined with my particular sense of place. ‘Did you have a good run?’ is a general local welcoming query upon arrival; a question directly related to pothole hits and misses. The brushwork and mark-making reimagine travelling sensations, with colours taking the initial response into a painterly joyride through imaginary terrain. These paintings continue my practice interest of paying attention to everyday sensations while moving through environments then extending this experience through material expression. Perhaps this process may provoke the viewer to connect with how they feel and consider the everyday beauty encountered when travelling here and there.
